Contest Submissions

The submission form for The Vet Gazette Volume 59 Issue 4 is now open!

All content can be submitted through our new, streamlined Google Form!  You will receive a submission reciept upon completion of the form.  You may edit your submission form until the form closes.  You may submit UP TO 3 individual pieces per category - any additional submissions will not be considered.  We ask that you title any document or photo submitted with your NAME and any CAPTION that you would like associated with it.  Lastly, please enter the mailing address that you would like a check sent to (should you be chosen as a winner!).

Submissions for Volume 59, Issue 4 will close on December 29th, 2024.

Submission Categories 

1. Cases and Abstracts:

Have you worked on a unique clinical case recently? Has your own pet been a puzzling case? Have you been involved with laboratory, clinical, or field research? We’d love to hear about your work! Send us your case report or research abstract - pictures are highly encouraged!  Actual reports will be favored over abstract submissions.

  • 1st place: $100
  • 2nd place: $50
  • up to 2 honorable mentions: Cash prize TBD

2. Photography:

Submit up to three of your best, original photographic works.  Please include a title!  If you're planning on submitting a photo of your pet, please refer to our new category #3!

  • Up to 8 best submissions: $50

3. Cutest Pet Award:

Submit up to three of your best, original photographs of your very own pet.  Please include a title!

  • Up to 8 best submissions: $50

4. Caption This Contest:

Can you imagine what animals might say if only we spoke the same language? Make up your best captions for the photographs below to earn some money. Send in up to 3 captions for the following picture(s) and one winner per photo will be selected for a cash prize.

5. Creative Corner:

Submit up to three of your best, original creative works; including paintings, drawings, multimedia, or other crafts.  

  • Up to 8 best submissions:  Cash prize TBD ($50-100)

6. Foot in Mouth Disease

Laughter is the best medicine, so share your funny experiences, jokes, poems, photos, memes, GIF's, or anything else with us.  In this category, ANYTHING GOES.  When submitting memes, photos, or GIF's, please limit them to 3/person.  Original works will be weighted more than pre-existing ones.  If you can make us laugh, we will dish out cash!

  • 1st place:       Cash prize TBD ($50-100)
  • 2nd place:       Cash prize TBD ($50-100)
  • up to 6 honorable mentions:  Cash prize TBD ($50-100)

7. Experiences: 

Tell us about some of your best experiences- vet related or not- that have been a meaningful part of your veterinary experience. This could include vacations, externships, employment opportunities, extracurricular activities, and more. How have they helped shape your unique path to a DVM or VMD? Photos encouraged with entries! Please limit your peice to 700 words.

8. Op-ed:

Have an unusual or proactive opinion on a current issue related to our profession? We want to hear it! Please limit op-ed pieces to 700 words. No awards are given to op-ed pieces. Feel free to include graphics, illustrations or photos that support your point. Pieces will be chosen by their strength of writing and timeliness of topic, as well as relevance to the veterinary community.

9. Letter to the Editor:

Have something to say regarding an article or post we've made recently? Let us know! Please limit letters to the editor to 300 words.  No awards will be given to letters to the editor. Letters that will be selected for publish may elaborate on the pros and cons of a certain submission, and may be in support or against a particular editorial announcement (look for posts from SAVMA committees or tagged as SAVMA News as a source for your letters).

OTHER AWARDS

SAVMA Chapter Award:

  • The SAVMA school chapter with the most submissions (EXCLUDING TRIVIA) will receive $300, and if it was a close race, the SAVMA chapter with the second most submissions will receive $200

Facebook Cover Photo Award:

Submissions to our Cutest Pet, Creative Corner, or Photography categories will also automatically be considered for the Facebook Cover Photo Award.  If it is selected, you will receive $50.  A new winner will be selected each month.
