 WINN AND THE AAFP TO OFFER TWO JOINT SCHOLARSHIPS FOR 2017

Wyckoff, NJ, Hillsborough, NJ:  Winn Feline Foundation (Winn) and the American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP) are pleased to announce two joint scholarships for third or fourth year veterinary students enrolled in an accredited veterinary college or school in the United States or Canada. The two $2,500 awards will be based upon academic achievement, financial need, leadership, and dedication to and excellence in the study of feline medicine, health and welfare. 

The Boards of Directors of both the AAFP and Winn enthusiastically approved the collaboration of these two leading feline-dedicated organizations in developing and implementing these two joint scholarships, one $2,500 scholarship for a veterinary student with a feline practice interest and the second $2,500 scholarship for a veterinary student with a clinical scientific research interest. 

All applications will be reviewed, selected, and approved by the AAFP and Winn. In addition to a short application form, interested students will also be required to answer two essay questions asking for the applicant to explain his/her specific interest and background in feline health and welfare, and to describe plans for future participation in feline medicine.  

All completed applications with accompanying supplementary documents must be received no later than March 17, 2017. The winning recipient will be notified of their award on or before April 15th, 2017.

As my first semester of vet school came to an end, I packed up my suitcase with warm clothes, my stethoscope, coveralls, and boots and headed off to Hardin, MT.  I was fortunate to have met Dr. Francis through family friends randomly, and we clicked right away, so I spoke with him about gaining some experience through his practice!  Hernia in a foalDr. Francis runs a mixed animal practice, Animal Care Center, in a rural area of Montana basically on the Crow Indian Reservation.  Being a Tucson native, I knew this would be a great opportunity for me to be exposed to an area with a different level of personal animal care than you mostly see in larger cities like Tucson where everything is “their baby”. 

In Hardin and the surrounding areas there are a ton of stray dogs, skinny horses, and feral cats that are kind of put outside to forage for food on their own with the occasional food tossed out to them.  On the contrary, there are also the family pets, ranchers’ cattle, and 4-H animals.  Hardin is a beautiful area if you really enjoy the outdoors, as the Bighorn River runs right through it and there are a lot of open spaces. 

Being on the reservation, there are an immense amount of strays.  Dr. Francis works closely with a rescue lady, Sheri.  Sheri runs a non-profit organization called Rez Dog Rescue and basically drives all over Crow Agency, Lodge Grass, and Lame Deer finding abandoned, neglected, and stray “Rez” (reservation mutts) dogs. Assisting Dr. Francis in surgery She brings them to Dr. Francis and he works with her at discounted prices to spay/neuter, treat, vaccinate, and deworm all these dogs.  Dr. Francis works to provide low cost veterinary care to the underserved area and help alleviate the rampant problem of abandoned “rez dogs”.  I got a lot of experience with spay and neuter surgeries, from sedation and anesthesia, to prepping the dogs on the surgery table, and assisting in surgery.  Dr. Francis also sets up spay/neuter clinics with the tribes, although there was not one during the break while I was there.

Scholarship opportunity

Here is an available scholarship opportunity for alumni of Chi Omega. Good luck to those who qualify!

The Alumnae Educational Grant program was established in 1997 by the Foundation Board of Trustees in order to meet the needs of alumnae, 24 years of age or older, desiring to further their education through part-time and full-time studies.  Ten $1,000 grants will be awarded in 2014 on the basis of need, merit and individual goals for study at the college, university and vocational or technical school levels.

The Rowdy and Lucky Shain Scholarship is available for Chi Omega collegians or alumnae pursuing degree programs in animal welfare or veterinary medicine. The goal of the Rowdy and Lucky Shain scholarship is to assist the growing core of caring Chi Omegas who are in a position to make positive changes in the humane treatment of animals. There will be two awards given during the 2014 – 2015 academic year; one award for $2,000 and one award for $1,500.
Applications and all required materials must be submitted online by February 3, 2014 for the Alumnae Educational Grant and the Rowdy and Lucky Shain Scholarship.  

The Mary Love Collins Memorial Scholarship is for Chi Omegas attending graduate school on a full time basis during the 2014-2015 academic year. Recipients are selected on the basis of scholarship, aptitude, contributions and service to Chi Omega, the university and the community, and personal and professional goals. We are offering six scholarships of $2260 each.
Applications and all required materials must be submitted online by March 3, 2014 for the Mary Love Collins Memorial Scholarship.

New SAVMA Scholarship

A new scholarship from SAVMA's Education and Professional Development Committee (EPDC) was created at this years AVMA convention:

NAVLE Study Package Scholarship: We are offering up to $300 to be used to purchase a NAVLE prep package. This scholarship was created in response to the annual NAVLE Survey, which shows that over 80% of fourth years use digital review services to study for the NAVLE.  To be eligible you must be a current 3rd year or entering 4th year and planning on taking the NAVLE in Fall of 2014. The winner of the award must also complete the annual NAVLE survey following the completion of the exam.
