DEI SHOWCASE 2023

Submissions are open to all student-run clubs that wish to highlight a specific event they hosted that promoted diversity, equity, and inclusion. We want to show our support for student organizations that strive to empower underrepresented groups in veterinary medicine and foster a more inclusive environment! ICDC will be reviewing submissions and selecting ten winners from ten student organizations that best exemplify DEI. If you have any questions, reach out to savma.icdc@gmail.com

Amount: One $300 award to top recipient, plus nine $200 awards will go to their student organization for their efforts.

STUDENTS: 

ICDC is seeking to recognize individual veterinary students who have gone above and beyond to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion within their institution, local community, and beyond. The ideal applicant may be involved in instituting DEI initiatives at their school, providing for underserved communities through public service, or even promoting political change on a broader scale. Do you know of someone who has put in the work to make veterinary medicine a more equitable place? Nominate them below! Self-nominations are also accepted. All SAVMA members are eligible for nomination.

Amount: Three winning submissions will be awarded $200. All nominees will receive a pin to recognize their efforts.

FACULTY: 

ICDC is seeking to recognize faculty members who have gone above and beyond to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion within their institution, local community, and beyond. The ideal applicant may be involved in DEI initiatives at their school, providing for underserved communities through public service, or even promoting political change on a broader scale. Do you know of someone who has put in the work to make veterinary medicine a more equitable place? Nominate them below! 

Amount: One winning submission will receive a pin and certificate to commemorate their work.

SAVMA IVSA Excellence Award

Final SAVMANewsletter highlight: The IVSA Excellence Award brought to you by the International Veterinary Experience Committee

SAVMA’s International Veterinary Experience Committee is now calling for nominations for the 2021 International Veterinary Student Association Excellence Award. This award can be given to an IVSA member who has excelled as a leader or significantly impacted their chapter. The Excellence Award is given in an effort to recognize both the time and determination put into advancing local chapters and their members towards accomplishing the IVSA mission. Please nominate anyone you believe has excelled in their efforts to make IVSA great. 

Deadline for nominations is March 1st at 5 PM EST and the winner will be announced at SAVMA Symposium 2021.

Communication Development Grant 

 

ATTENTION CREATIVE MINDS! Next up for our SAVMANewsletter highlight: the Communication Development Grant brought to you by the Integrative Communications and Diversity Committee.

The Integrative Communication and Diversity Committee (ICDC) would like to assist you and your organization in hosting an event that will encourage the development and improvement of communication in veterinary medicine. The ICDC can grant up to five grants ranging from $200 to $500 to organizations that need monetary assistance in hosting such events. The application deadline is March 15th, 2021.

Applicants are required to produce a creative work such as a video, poster, piece of art, etc. that demonstrates how their event will encourage growth in communication. The creative work will be submitted within the google form application found below, along with more details regarding the event itself, an outline of their budget and the need for monetary assistance, as well as the names of the organization(s) hosting the event and the associated university. CDC Veterinary Public Health Essay Contest 2020-2021

Have you had the chance to check out this month's SAVMANewsletter? Have no fear! Over the next few days, the Vet Gazette will be highlighting some of the incredible grant and scholarship opportunities SAVMA has to offer. First up: CDC Veterinary Public Health Essay Contest brought to you by the SAVMA Public Health and Community Outreach Committee

The Public Health and Community Outreach Committee (PHCOC) has organized an essay contest to award 10 awards of $200 to individuals who attended the 2021 CDC Veterinary Public Health Q&A Panel. This contest is meant to encourage interest in public health and support those considering a career in veterinary public health. In order to be eligible for this scholarship, the student must be a SAVMA member in good standing attending an accredited school or college of veterinary medicine. 

The biennial CDC Day was held virtually this year as a Q&A Panel featuring veterinary public health professionals on January 11th, 2021. Essay applicants should have attended or watched the recording of the webinar.

Students must answer the following question in 500 words or less: Describe what you learned from the CDC Public Health Panel and how this is important to you and your future veterinary career.

The Human-Animal Bond Grant 

Are you passionate about the human-animal bond? Have you been trying to come up with ways to emphasize the importance of it at your school? Read below to learn more about a funding opporunity for just that! Deadline approaching!

"The purpose of this AWESC Human-Animal Grant is to reimburse SAVMA members to initiate or sustain human-animal bond projects, defray expenses for special lectures on topics involving human-animal bond, and enhance the education of veterinary students in tangible ways related to the human-animal bond. The grant does NOT cover travel expenses for any mentioned about. The grant will provide 5 students with a total of $500 each. The application will be due October 31st, 2020 at 11:59pm. The winning participants will be notified November 20th, 2020.
